vCenter Issue

Hello Experts

vCenter services not starting (Windows vCenter 6.0 with embedded postgres database) & SSO on a seperate windows server.  Getting error code 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly.

While checking the configuration of VPXD.Conf file (located in C:\ProgramData\VMWARE\vCenterServer\CFG\vmware-vpx) , it shows blank (this is a surprise for me) although the size of file is showing as 5KB. Has anyone encountered this issue before?

Further while checking the logs, I noticed that on vpxd.log (there are database errors - ODBC errror (IM002) - Data source name not found and no default driver specified, Error getting configuration info from the database, Database not initialized, Nothing to unlock, Forcing shutdown of vCenterserver now.

However, if I do a test of ODBC connection, it is showing as successful.

Please suggest if someone encountered any such issue. Just to inform you, on SSO server, all vmware services are started. Its only vCenter which is having issues.

Thx

Hello Rajat,

Note : before any changes, take snapshot of the vcenter and have a healthy backup

Can you try to recreate the vpxd.cfg or restore from backups (if you have any) or try to copy the file from different vCenter(if exisitng in your environment or lab) and change the conf information from the vpxd.cfg..

Also check if the vpxd.cfg which shows 5KB permissions as it is showing blank. Also check the vcdb.properties file to check if it is populating information or is it showing blank as it is the file which stores the db files and in your case it fails with populating or connecting to db as the source information is not found.

One of the possibility is file is corrupted.

Thanks,

MS

Please try below steps and check if issue fixed and also suggest please check below URL.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Open the vpxd.cfg file. This file is located in the vCenter Server machine at:
    • Windows 2003 – %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\
    • Windows 2008 – C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\
  2. From the vpxd.log file , identify the line that has a syntax error.
  3. Correct the syntax error. For example, in case of the sample log in the Symptoms section, line 24 in the vpxd.cfg file was missing a closing bracket.
  4. Save and close the vpxd.cfg file.
  5. Restart the VMware VirtualCenter Server service. For more information, see
