vCenter Inventory Service won't start

Hello,

The issue I have is with a newly built vCenter server. Having installed and configured the individual components, the vCenter Inventory service won't start. The event log entry 7024 is logged with the message advising that the service terminated with service-specific error Incorrect function.

The most suitable KB article was the following - VMware KB: vCenter Inventory Service fails to start and cannot back up the Inventory Service databas... However that failed to make any difference.

Has anyone come across this problem before, and knows how to rectify it, (aside from scrapping it and starting again).

Many Thanks

Looks like removing the host from vCentre and adding it back in has worked. Thanks.

Cause

If the Inventory service is started during the upgrade the ds.jar file is locked, which prevents the service from being upgraded properly.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, perform one of these options:

Replace the ds.jar file:

  1. Log into the vCenter Server as an administrator.
  2. Navigate to the C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Inventory Service\lib folder and locate the ds.jar file.
  3. Create a backup copy of the ds.jar file.
  4. Download the ds.jar file from this article, or copy ds.jar from another installation of vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1.
  5. Replace the existing file with the new file.
  6. Restart the VMware Inventory Service.
  7. Restart the VMware VirtualCenter Server service.
