vCenter HA configuration help needed

In the prerequisites for setting up vCenter HA it states: "

  • The vCenter Server Appliance that will become the Active node is managing its own ESXi host and its own virtual machine. This configuration is sometimes called a self-managed vCenter Server."

We had no problem adding in the host but when it's own virtual machine into the datacenter we get this error:  "vcenter does not support hosts of this type"

What are we missing?

Hi,

Please share the following:

1. What is the version of vCenter and ESXi hosts ?

2. What is the license being used on vCenter and ESXi host ?

Based on this:

vcenter does not support hosts of this type (vmware vcenter server 5.5.0)

Is it possible that your vCenter version is below your esxi version?

You can check here:
VMware Knowledge Base

Also, do you have DNS configured? Are you sure it's working fine?

So we did notice that the VM itself is shown under the host in the datacenter...is this what is meant by the instructions?  That when you add in it's host it also adds in itself since it is a VM on the host?  We pushed ahead without adding in the VM separately and were able to get it to work in a test environment on the same network.
