vCenter 6.7 implementation

Dear,

i have a question on implementing the new Vcenter 6.7 in a new productions.

We do have 4 Esxi 6.7 hosts up and running and want to add a vcenter to manage those from one side.

we want to install the vcenter in one of the 4 esxi hosts in order to manage those.

is this advisable or not ? or need to have a dedicate box for the vcenter?

Thank you

Yes.

In our setup we have 4 different clusters. 2 of them are vSANs and 2 of them use normal shared Storage and our single vCenter runs on a normal Cluster.  I dont say its a no-go to run vCenter on top of your vSAN but we feel much better if we do it this way (lack of experience maybe).

Regards,

Joerg

Nothing such , you cna have Vcenter appliance deployed on any one of the esxi servers.

Recommending to deploy VCSA appliance instead of windows vcenter server .

Hello,

Sure you can deploy the vCenter in one of the hosts to manage all of them.

Please consider marking this answer "CORRECT" or "Helpful" if you think your question have been answered correctly.

We do have 4 Esxi 6.7 hosts up and running and want to add a vcenter to manage those from one side.

How are the currently installed ESXi hosts licensed?

Please remember that hosts, which are licensed with the free Hypervisor edition cannot be managed to vCenter Server.

Any paid ESXi/CPU license (Standard, or better) will do with 4 hosts, or more.

Note that - unless you are planning for more than 4 hosts - you may consider "vCenter Server Foundation" (for up to 4 hosts with current versions) over "vCenter Server Standard" to save some money.

As mentioned in my previous reply:

  • "vCenter Server Foundation" - for up to 4 hosts with current versions
  • "vCenter Server Standard" - any number of hosts up to the supported maximum

If you start with 4 Hosts i suggest that you go for the vCenter Standard rather than the vCenter Foundation (max. 4 Hosts). Downside is its costs 3 time more.....   well i contains 25 VM Pack of vCenter LogInsight. But after Host #4 you will buy Host #5 Smiley Happy

Yes, its possible to upgrade vCenter Foundation to vCenter Standard later if needed.

vCenter runs perfectly on top of the cluster based on your 4 Hosts. Its covered by VMware HA and you can use vMotion, svMotion and DRS as well.

You have mentioned "vSAN"...  than the anwer is not that easy. Yes you can run vCenter on that cluster and also on this vSAN but let me say that you can have a hard time to manage your vSAN when vCenter is not available because of vSAN Problems.

IRIX201110141 regarding the vsan availibility. do you suggest to use vcenter off the hosts that will run vsan in ?

we understand we will go for the STD vcenter licenses.

We are running 2-nodes highly-available cluster based on StarWind VSAN Free and decided to deploy vCenter Server Appliance on a top of HA storage. Works with 0 issues for now.
