Hi Guys,
I need some help with vCenter 5.5. For some reason i am unable to upgrade from vCenter 5.1 to 5.5. I am using the custom install were i am able to install SSO, Inventary Service and the Web Client but when it comes to installing vCenter i get the following error
" Setup failed to validate vCenter Inventory Service, an error occurredd while talking to the vCenter Inventory Service "
I have tried the simple install and i get the same error.
Please help
Regards
Kaylin
Hi,
Did you check this previous post? vCenter 5.1 Install fails to validate Inventory service with SSO Admin
You can try to uninstall the inventory service and reinstalled the service again.
And can you attached the vminst.log please. Usually in your %tmp% folder.

Julien.
Hi Julien,

Can you attached the vminst.log please.

Hi I had a look under programdata/vmware/vmware virtualcenter/logs but i cant seem to fimd that file is there anywere else i can look
check in your %tmp% folder.
Hi Kaylin,
I suspect an SSL certificate issue. Can you attached the vc-update-trust-to-is.log ? I need to confirm this point.
But if you can create a snapshot of your virtual center, test this :VMware KB: SSL Certificate Automation Tool fails to update vCenter Server Trust to Inventory service...
Regards,
Julien.
were can i find that log file for that
check here C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\SSL\
Hi Julien,
There is no such log file in that location but i do see a security certificate and kel file. There is also a keystore file and truststore file
Regards
Kaylin
Ok,
Can you attached the last log generate here : c:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\Logs and here c:\ProgramData\VMware\Infrastructure\Inventory Service\Logs
Regards,
Julien.
Keaylin, what is your Database version ?
I found this in your log :" error 'Default'] Database version id '550' is incompatible with this release of VirtualCenter"
Regards,
Julien.
I have the databases on SQL Server R2 SP2 - 10.50.4000.0(x64). I never had any problems with my databases before. i had vCenter 4.1 then i upgraded to 5.0 then upgraded to 5.1. So i dont know really why this upgrade is giving me such a problem
Using the same database version? Because with 5.5 the database compatibility is more restrictive.
Can you tell me the exact version of your database please : ex SQL server 2008 Standard R2 SP2 x64
You can check here the compatibility list : VMware Product Interoperability Matrixes and select "Solution/Database Interoperability"
Regards,
Julien.
Its SQL Enterprise R2 SP2 64 bit and i checked its combatible. Caqn i not do a fresh install of vCenter 5.5 and just point it to the databases i should loose any data if i do it that way
I assume it is a 2008 DB, so yes you can test a fresh install.
Backup your existing DB before... Then drop the existing 5.5 DB, re-create the 5.1 schema and import your DB.
But before, can you purge the %tmp% folder, re-start the installation process and attach all the log file generated.

Julien.
Hi kaylin..Im new to this but I have same error , problem and I tried everything but solution is reinstall Vmware Vcenter inventory service. Just Uninstall Vcenter inventory service, reinstall it and it solved my problem at least.
Hi,
I've seen problems similar to this before, the issue was due to us installing the Inventory Service from ISO Media connected to the VM directly.
We copied out from the media the Inventory service binaries and installed it from the local disk and it worked fine. I don't know if this will help or not but thought i'd share.
Cheers,
Ryan
