vCenter 5.1 - network issue between hosts

vCenter 5.1

(2) hosts running esxi 5.1

I have VM's in a single dvSwitch and dvPortGroup on both hosts - 5 VM's total.

Here's where it gets weird:

- all VM's on host1 can ping/browse all VM's on host2

- VM's on host2 can ping/browse all *EXCEPT ONE* VM on host1.

- All VM's can ping gateway and beyond

That is - VM1 on host 1 can ping VM2 and VM3 on host2, but VM2 and VM3 can't ping VM1.

Not firewall or anything in the guests, because VM4 on host1 *CAN* ping VM1.

Seems like an arp, or vNetwork issue.

Any thoughts, known issues?

Found it!

I had 2 switch ports not Tagged in the VLAN giving me the problems.

While everything looked spot on in the configurations, the physical links at the switch were the root cause.

Thanks for your input - it led me down the path to eventually discover the issue.

How is the Uplink configuration including the load balance ? If you vMotion VM1 to host2 you can ping VM2 and VM3 ?

Interesting...in further testing, a VM on host1 pings VM1 until it motions to host 2.

I will have to confirm port assignments to physical links tomorrow.

Thanks for the input - i'll follow up when I can confirm connectivity.
