esxi 4.1 to 5.5 host Upgrade

hi all, hope this help,

I have installed a new vcenter 5.5 and still running a vcenter 4.1, running both at the same time, I have migrated a 4.1 host across to my 5.5 platform, and wish to upgrade the host to 5.5 (I have a license), my question is, will it affect my other storage on the san, other hosts on 4.1 are running there, and I don't wish to upgrade this one to 5.5 if it will affect the other storage on the old vcenter (things are still running) It sound quite a simple thing to do , but unsure of this, and cant afford to make error with the old esx environment..

You can upgrade the ESXi 4.1 host managed by vCenter 5.5 without issues. To be safe, disconnect the hosts HBA card when doing the upgrade if using FC. If I understand correctly, both the upgraded ESXi 5.5 and the existing ESXi 4.1 hosts are using the same datastores. The only caveat I can see is after upgrading the ESXi 5.5 host, do not upgrade the datastores from VMFS3 to VMFS5 so as not to affect the existing 4.1 environment.

Hi

How many hosts do you have?

Have you connect all of your host to new vCenter 5.5?

If you have multiple hosts, you can emtpy 1 host by vMotion-ing the VMs to different hosts.

Upgrade the empty host.

Make sure the upgraded host still can see existing Datastores.

vMotion 1 VM first (you can start with non critical VMs or you can just create 1 new VM for testing) from 4.x host to the new 5.5 host.

If successful, update the remaining host by vMotion-ing the other VMs to new host so the old host is empty and repeat the process until you upgrade all the hosts.

If you only have 1 host, you will need downtime and need some backup for your VMs in case you have something goes wrong during the upgrade.

hi anttera,

Firtst categories  all you vm  4.1 and 5.5 , then move the  Vm in to respective  location ( Using migrate option move the  VM datastore from one to another)

     1. For 4.1

     2. For 5.5

After migrate the host 4.1 in to 5.5   do upgrade the vmfs 3 file system to   vmfs 5 , your 4.1 environment remains same .
