Web Client Max Disk Size Thin Provision

All,

I've noticed in the web client when we try to create say a 2 TB disk it won't let us add it to the VM if we don't have a LUN in SDRS cluster with at least 2 TB.  It goes red saying larger than max size.  Thin provision should allow this.  In the thick client it seems to work fine.

Whether you can go above the 2TB for a VM's virtual disk depends on:

  • the datastore's VMFS version
  • the ESXi version
  • the VM's virtual hardware version/compatibility mode
  • the VM's virtual HDD controller

If the requirements are met, you shouldn't have issue with creating virtual disks with up to 62TB.

Thanks Andre, I know VMFS is good, ESXi is good. I'll double check the VM hardware version (should be 10) and controller.  I just found it odd it was saying the max size matched the size of the datastore with the largest free space in the SDRS cluster.  It doesn't restrict based on that at all?

Edit, OK looks like i can add NEW disks and make 2 TB, but extending an existing does not allow larger than max datastore free.

Ok I found another VERY wierd behavior.  In the thick client, I can select 2 TB and if max size was say 200 GB, then I click off and go back to edit again, it will let me set to 400 GB.  Then, click off again I can do 600, its like it adds the max space every time.  Extremely strange behavior.

That's indeed strange. Anyway, after re-reading your initial post, I think that I may have missed that you are using SDRS. In this case maybe Avoiding VMDK level over-commitment while using Thin disks and Storage DRS can help finding the cause of this issue!?

Yeah, I get all that, but it is very odd that when I create a NEW disk it works just fine, it is only the behavior of extending an existing disk.  I guess I'll open a ticket, because it appears to be a bug!
