Warnings on both controller cards but no info

I have an error on my Hardware status tab for both controllers on my HP DL560 in vCenter

but there is no further info on what is wrong with the cards.  Firmware on both cards is up to date

according to HP.  Is there any way I can see exactly what's wrong with these cards from and ESX POV?

You are probably seeing an issue similar to this that is a bug with some versions the hp management bundle.

Thanks, yes, this seems to be the case, I'll apply the patch now.

Can this be done through update manager?

Yes, you can either add HP (http://vibsdepot.hp.com/index.xml) to the Update Manager repositories, or download the Offline bundle files (e.g. hp-esxi5.0uX-bundle-1.4.5-3.zip and hp-ams-esxi5.0-bundle-9.3.5-3.zip) manaually and import them in Update Manager.

We only have vSphere essentials so I dont think update manager comes with that, I think I'll have to use the CLI.

Update Manager is included in all editions, even in the Essentials Kits. However, with only a few hosts, it might be more complex to install and maintain Update Manager than to install the patches manually.
