Please go through following PDF

http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-55-upgrade...

Page 42 - VC upgrade summary

Page 43 - Required Information for Installing or Upgrading vCenter Single Sign-On, Inventory Service, vCenter Server, and the vSphere Web Client

Page 63 onwards you will find various different scenarios being discussed

your's is distributed deployment where your SSO, Inv Service, vCenter and web client are deployed separately and I don't see any issue in the order you have mentioned in the post. That is going to be right order of upgrade.

Page 127 onwards, they are also discussing post upgrade stuff if you have additional services like update manager, dump collector etc...

Hope this helps.

Yes , you are absolutely correct.

you can upgrade vCenter Server components separately, for installations in which the location and configuration of the components is customized. For more information on upgrading each component separately in your vSphere environment, perform these steps:

  1. Upgrade vCenter Single Sign-On.
For more information, see Upgrading to vCenter Single Sign-On 5.5 on a Microsoft Windows platform (2058249).
  2. Upgrade vSphere Web Client.
For more information, see Upgrading to vSphere Web Client 5.5 on a Microsoft Windows platform (2058265).
  3. Upgrade vCenter Inventory Service.
For more information, see Upgrading to vCenter Inventory Service 5.5 on a Microsoft Windows platform (2058272).
  4. Upgrade vCenter Server.
For more information, see Upgrading to vCenter Server 5.5 on a Microsoft Windows platform (2058275).

Here is the link of vmware KB supporting your statement. http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&externalId=2...
