VSphere client "internal error" when connecting to Vcenter 6.5

Hi all,

I'm really stumped by this error. I have a new install of VCenter 6.5 running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM. When trying to connect using local or AD authentication we get following error:

"Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

See screenshot: http://imgur.com/a/UUrYD

Things I have tested:

Connecting to the Vcenter web interface works fine.

Connecting to the individual ESXi hosts with the Vsphere client client works fine.

Connecting to our other Vcenter servers works fine.

Connecting to the problematic Vcenter from different machines gives the same error. I tried using fresh Vsphere client installs on a Win 10 x64, Win 7 x64 and the localhost itself.

I tried reinstalling the Vcenter server.

I did a fresh install of the VM. It used to be a Windows Server 2012, I downgraded to 2008 for troubleshooting purposes.

I made sure .net 3.5.1 is installed.

I disabled the VM's firewall.

I checked if all the Vmware services were up and running.

None of these steps made any difference. We are still getting the same error.

In the logfile I can see failed connection attempts on ports 6502 (Auto Deploy Management) and 7475 (Can't find this port in the VMware documentation). I checked the server's netstat output and do not see these two ports up.

I'm not sure this connection failure is causing the issue but I'm ready to try anything.

I've put my logfiles up on pastebin in case anyone feels like taking a look;

vcclient log: http://pastebin.com/5MhiEteq

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! I really wanna get this fixed so I can continue with the good stuff!

are you getting this error while connecting to web client or vSphere Think client (C#client)?

Indeed, the thick client doesn't seem to be supported anymore in Vcenter 6.5.

An error message indicating this would have been nice, thanks Vmware!
