VMWare tools upgrade finishes, but doesn't allow features to work

Hi,

I've updated the vmware tools from vSphere 5.5 (guest-> install/upgrade -> opened the CD, ran the .php file, and answered yes to all questions (except document sharing between host and guest).

However, when I open a console window from vSphere, the window is still really small, and I can't copy/paste from in/outside the VM at all - which seems like tools are not installed correctly.

In vsphere - under summary, vmware tools i see "running (3rd-party/independent).

I'm not expert in linux, so don't know what to report to you to help troubleshoot this.  please let me know... happy to provide it.

(I used this guide:  https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vsphere.upgrade.doc_50%2FGUID-08BB9...)

some additional info:

- guest os: Centos7

I received this warning when installing:

"open-vm-tools are installed on this system. Do you want to continue a minimal

installation of VMware tools? Otherwise the packages open-vm-tools need to be

removed. [yes] "

further update:

I did a yum remove open-vm-tools

then reinstalled the vmware tools via vSphere,

but no change, and now it doesn't even show as installed on the vSphere summary page under "vmware tools".  It shows "not running (not installed"
