VCenter Emails

I'm trying to Configuring VMware vCenter Server to send alarms.  I'm following the directions found on the following webpage.

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=101802...

The emails are not being sent out so I am trying to troubleshoot the problem.  VCenter is on a virtual machine.  Does the VCenter VM need to be the one where ports are opened up for the smtp server or do the hosts need to be opened up?

Thanks

Make sure that any antivirus software is not interfering, and also check out http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1004070

Even though the server had access to send messages to the smtp server via the network, further configuration had to be made on the smtp server to allow the vcenter server to send emails to the relay.  In response to my original question, the vcenter vm was the one that needed to be configured, not the hosts.
