Upgrading Vcenter server

I have currently a Vcenter server 5.5. Recently, we purchased a new server with more power to be able to upgrade to 6 next year. My question is: Can I just back my sql from the old server and restore to the new server? I would also have to copy the SSL from the old server to the new server?

I have already backed up the old database. Any help would be appreciate it.

Is the new vCenter server going to be a physical machine?

If it's virtual you can to a migration & upgrade to the VCSA: Windows vCenter Server 5 5 Conversion to VCSA 6.5 including Update Manager - YouTube

If it's physical (or virtual) then I believe that you need to follow this KB to move the SQL DB and SSL certificates Migrating vCenter Server to a different host machine (5850444) | VMware KB

once this is done, you can upgrade the VC

Hope this helps!

It is a new Physical server. The new server has 2012 and the old server is 2008.I got the SSL certs and the backup database from the old server. While it is installing it wants to reinstall the Inventory database if I don't replace it. It won't install

So I have installed with replacing the Inventory database. It finished installing successfully and all my hosts are there.  They appear disconnected. I didn't license it because we only have one license for a vCenter server. I am concerned that if I take the license of the old to the new and the new doesn't work. I am going to be in a big problem

You will be able to physically apply the license on the new VC. The licenses must be removed ASAP from the old VC instance otherwise you will be breaching your VMware agreement. It will work though and you will be able to "roll-back"
