Upgrade vCenter 5.0u3 to new seperate vCenter 5.5u1 server

I currently have a vCenter server 5.0u3 server with about 20 ESXi 5.0u3 hosts. My environment is running HA, DRS, SDRS, and has a single vDS with tons of port groups within.

OS is Win Srv 2008 r2 with SQL 2005 SP4.

I have set up a new vCenter and separate SQL 2008 SP1 server both on Win Srv 2012 r2.

Is there a way to migrate all the data from the old vCenter to a new server? Could I just backup the old database and restore over the new vCenter 5.5 database?

Surprisingly there is little on the web about this type of migrated update. If anyone can help I will be very grateful.

Thanks,

JAke

Hi Jake,

Yes that is the correct approach to get the data migrated. Just backup and restore the olde vCenter Database to new vCenter database. You might want to try the below link,

VMware KB: Migrating the vCenter Server database from SQL Express to full SQL Server

Thanks,

But wouldn't the database schema change with the new version? If I restore the old DB on top of the new DB wouldn't I be missing new tables and what not for the new features in 5.5u1?
