Unable to Add Host to vCenter 5.0

Well, try real hard Smiley Wink

There could be several reasons for this:

  • you are trying to add a host licensed with the free Hypervisor license
  • you are using either vCenter Server for Essentials or vCenter Server Foundation and there are already 3 hosts connected to it
  • you are trying to add a host with a higher version then vCenter Server, i.e. ESXi 5.1 or ESXi 5.5 to the vCenter Server

VMware ESXi ver. 5.1.0

Build: 1157734

VMware vCenter Server ver. 5.0.0

Build: 434157

Operating System: Server 2003 Standard Edition 64bit

Actually, the Error states : "A general system error occurred: Timed waiting for vpxa to start"

I confirmed that the vpxa service was running while the esxi host was being added to vCenter.

That won't work. vCenter 5.0 doesn't support ESXi 5.1 hosts. In order to add ESXi 5.1 hosts to a vCenter Server, you need vCenter Server 5.1 or newer. For supported configurations, see VMware Product Interoperability Matrix

Thanks AP, Cyber27 and Abhilash, used ESXi 5.0, vCenter and successfully added host to vCenter.
