I'm trying to create an ubuntu template. However when I try to deploy a VM from the template with customizations (setting a static IP), the customizations fail leaving the network in a nonworking state.
I tried searching for a solution but all I found was the KB article about creating a symlink (/etc/dhcp3 -> /etc/dhcp). I tried doing that but I think I have a different issue.
There is one error event stating: "An Error occurred while customizing VM MachineName. For details reference the log file <No Log> in the guest OS." There does not appear to be any vmware logs written to the guest OS.
What might be causing this issue? Are there any other log locations I should be looking for?
Does the VM have VMware Tools or the open-vm-tools? In the latter case, you need to install some additional package - see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2075048.

You cannot find the log /var/log/vmware-imc/toolsDeployPkg.log ?
Correct, there is no /var/log/vmware-imc/toolsDeplayPkg.log on the newly deployed guest os. The vmware-imc folder does not exist.
Also, it appears that for whatever reason its deploying with the NIC in a disconnected state, even though it was set to connect at startup when I created the template. Rechecking "connect at startup" before turning the new vm on still gives me the same customization error.

I am using open-vm-tools. Adding the deployPkg seems to have done the trick. Now when I deploy the template everything works as expected.
--EDIT
I spoke to soon. It appears that DNS settings are not getting applied.
Thanks
It could be that your version of vCenter does not yet support Ubuntu 14.04. Could you please provide the build number?
Thanks,
Andrii
version 5.5.0 build 1750787
Ubuntu 14.04 isn't officially supported by that build, only up to 13.10 (see http://partnerweb.vmware.com/programs/guestOS/guest-os-customization-matrix.pdf). But it will be supported in one of the future releases.
I see. I was thinking it was supported, but I can never keep that straight.
We'll keep that document updated so that you can use it as a reference when 5.5u2 comes out, etc.
