Most of my VMs list under Tasks and Events numerous entries for snapshots created and almost immediately deleted. They don't happen every day, but they happen frequently.
What is causing these activities and is there any value to the snapshots that are created if they are immediately deleted?
Most likely backups
Most likely backups
Not sure I follow. Do you mean these entries occur as a result of backup activity on the VM? How would I approach checking that?
Yes. Do you not know if you have backup software working against these virtual machines?
Is there a positive indication on the VM side that a backup job caused these entries as opposed to some other activity?
Normally there is username associated with these events, track down the username and find out why. Most backup programs I'm aware of that integrate with vcenter use snapshots for the backups
Okay, I see reference to the backup system causing the entries, but why would the snapshots be created and immediately removed? In one example only 24 seconds pass between the create and remove entries.
Its all the time the backup program needs
In one example only 24 seconds pass between the create and remove entries.
How does the backup work? In case it's doing a direct backup from the SAN/storage, there's no need to keep the VM snapshot for a long time.

if there is only a small amount of change between when the last backup occurred, it would be correct to see a snapshot being created and removed in such a short period of time.
