Storage vMotion of VMs to another Cluster in remote site

Hi,

Currently, we are running vSphere 6 running at HQ and a remote site (Connected via  Fiber).   We ask a consultant to upgrade the vSphere to latest version and migrate all VMs from HQ to remote site (We will close the HQ site soon).

From the proposal, it writes that Storage vMotion of VMs can e done without system downtime.  In this way, he says that all work will be done during business hour and will charge us extra money if he needs to work after hour.

I have tried with vSphere 6 C# Client but it seems that we need to shutdown those VMs before they can be migrated across.

Is there any suggestion ?

Thanks

Hi @TonyJK!

A few questions to better understand your environment:

Are you guys running vCenter at all? If so, are both sites managed by the same vCenter?

What type of licensing to you have on the hosts?

Are the VMs that are moving all standalone VMs, or do you have any clusters with shared virtual disks?

What's the speed and distance of the link between HQ and Remote? Are we talking across the street, across the campus, across the county, state, country?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

1) Yes, we are running vCenter Server on a Windows VM

2) We get Enterprise Edition running

3) There is no shared disk among VMs

4) Speed between sites is 10Gbps.  They are around 10 blocks away.

Thanks
