Simple Install 5.5 update 1b to update 2b

I just need to patch from 5.5 1b to 2b. Is the simple install a good way to do this?

Thanks,

Mike

If the 5.5 1b was a simple install then go ahead with same, It will work.

The 5.5 1b was not a simple install as it was an upgrade from 5.0 (custom install). Does that mean I have to do another custom install just to patch?

Sorry but yes. That would be a recommended way.

The only difference between simple install and custom install is that, in simple install, all the components' install/upgrade wizards are brought up one after the other automatically.

In custom you run them manually Smiley Wink Apart from that there is absolutely no difference.

This helps, thank you. I'll take a snapshot of the VM and a db backup, do the simple install, and go from there.

Hm...so I went to do the Simple Install and I get this error message and can't continue.

"vCenter Package components already installed. Please install any remaining components by clicking on the respective links on the left"

So it seems like Custom Install is the only way to patch?

Yes Please try custom install if earlier was custom install.

I went ahead with the Custom Install and it went fine. It's interesting that the Simple Install wouldn't work at all. It's also interesting that there isn't a cleaner way to apply patches to vCenter.

Thanks for all the replies.

@Mike, Its not about small patch or bigger patch. Its about the workflow. In your earlier installation you have provided custom values which is not there in simple install. So when you are upgrading simple install will take the default values and will fail. However when you will be doing custom install it will pick your custom values from previous install and thats the reason it went fine with this approach.

Thanks,

DJ

No i have done simple install lot of times even though the components were installed using custom install previously. The latest updated is made in such a way that it no more supports simple install for upgradation.
