It depends on what the vCenter server's PNID (primary network identifier).

Please take a look at e.g. https://www.vcdx200.com/2018/04/what-is-vcenter-pnid.html which explains this.

The blog post you linked says that it is not supported by VMware and even the author says that you shouldn't do it. Especially not in a production environment.

As a.p. has already mentioned, the problem is the PNID, which cannot or should not be changed. This PNID is set during vCenter installation and is the value from the hostname field during installation. That means, if you used for example "vc01.domain.local" as hostname during installation, you won't be able to change this hostname. However, you can change the IP address in this case. And if you entered the IP address as the hostname during installation, you can change the hostname but not the IP address.

So if you intend to change both (the hostname and IP address), this will probably not be possible.

With the following command you can check on vCenter shell what is set as PNID:

/usr/lib/vmware-vmafd/bin/vmafd-cli get-pnid --server-name localhost

And this value cannot be changed.

But if your goal is just renaming the VM name in the vSphere (Web) Client, this is possible at any time.
