Quick question about ESXi 5.1 P1 (Build 914609) and vCenter

We may need to apply patch 1 (Build 914609) on our ESXi 5.1 hosts due to an issue.  We are currently on vCenter 5.1 (Build 799733).  Would it be necessary to update vCenter 5.1 to the latest build prior to updating the ESXi 5.1 hosts to Build 914609?  I just want to verify.  I've already checked the VMware Product Interoperability Matrix but it's not build number specific.

I'm not aware of any requirements to patch vCenter prior to patching the hosts. As you can see in the Interoperability Matrix, with the all the different versions of vCenter Server, it was supported to run ESXi hosts with the same version, independent of the patch level.

If you want to be 100% sure, open a call with VMware.

Hi,

In vSphere 4.1 you don't need to apply patches before into vCenter server. The build can be major on the Hosts than the vCenter, i'm assuming that is the same in vSphere 5.
But always is better to start with vCenter and his tools, like VUM.
