Problems creating HA on vCenter 6.5

Hello,

I having a problem while creating HA on vCenter 6.5. At the end of creation wizzard i get information: "the vmware vcenter server 6 essentials license for "vcenter server" does not include "vcenter ha". upgrade the license".

I tried to create HA cluster od 2 hosts (2 cpu per host) and vcenter 6.5 appliance. My licenses are: vSphere 6 Essentials PLUS (6 cpu's) and vCenter Server 6 Essentials (1 instance).

Am i doing something wrong, or got wrong lisenses? Please advise.

I'am trying to do both, but failed at vCenter HA feature. So if i understod You correctly, using my licenses i can create cluster witch two ESXi hosts providing HA, but i can't add HA feature do vCenter itself , right?

Yes, but you can protect the vCenter virtual machine with HA like a normal virtual machine. If you're confused about HA diferences, check the following blog post: https://www.vladan.fr/vmware-vsphere-6-5-native-vcenter-high-availability/

My other question is, if i have vsphere essentials PLUS for hosts, and get vCenter standard license, can i make both, HA cluster on hosts and HA feature on vCenter? or do i have to buy another set of licenses?

You will need Standard license or higher to your hosts too, since the vCenter Standard cannot manage hosts with Essentials license.

Make sure you're assigning the vSphere Essentials Plus to your hosts and vCenter, since the Essentials license do not include the High Availability feature.

So, You are suggesting to put vcenter license and vshpere license to vcenter appliance? or to put all licenses to vcenter appliance and hosts? Can You be little more specyfic?

Sorry, just to confirm if I understand you. You're trying create a cluster with two vSphere ESXi host and enable High Availability (HA) on that cluster? Or you're trying to enable the vCenter High Availability feature released with version 6.5 in your vCenter virtual machine? If the answer is yes to my last question, the reason why you're getting error is that the vCenter Essentials license do not include the vCenter High Availability feature, you will need the vCenter Standard edition.

Hi Mr. Richardson

By mistake i applied vcenter essentials license to vcenter server.

but i have vsphere Essentials plus license which are applied to hosts.

But due to this HA cluster on hosts is also not working.

Kindly guide me how to remove vcenter essential license and apply vsphere essential plus license on vcenter server.

Thanks & regards
