Hi,

I have a dvSwitch connected to 2 uplinks (10Gbps each) and currently used for vSAN ONLY but want to add vMotion traffic with no/minimal impact.

What would be the best way to see how much traffic is being used by vSAN prior to the change?

Within the Resource Allocation table, if I set the vSAN traffic Share value to 100 and vMotion with a value of 50, would this mean that in contention times vSAN is "only" allowed up to 66% of the total bandwidth of the physical adapters? (100/(100+50))

The other system default traffic types/shares are not applicable/part of the share as long as they are not enabled(or active)?

Can I add vMotion traffic to an existing vmkernel (Ex: the one used for vSAN) or a seperate vmkernel should be created for vMotion?

You can check how much traffic is being used by looking at the SAN host performance charts.

When the performance service is turned on, the host summary displays performance statistics for each host and its attached disks.

Regarding the shares, you're correct. It only kicks in when there is contention.

If you want to guarantee resources to traffic you need to create reservations. Keep in mind that reserved capacity that is not consumed is not redistributed.

Because you only use vSAN traffic for these uplinks the default traffic types/shares are not applicable. If you are going to use other traffic (for example vMotion or VM data) on the same uplinks the configured shares will be used in case of contention.

vSAN and vMotion traffic on the same interface is fully supported and will perform properly if sized and configured correctly (use Network I/O Control).
