Moving host from vSwitch to Distributed switch - only 1 interface

Hello Team,

vCenter 5.5 with one ESXi host (5.5) which is having just one physical interface.

I wanted to test distributed switch managed by vCenter. I have created DSwitch1 and allocated it to my host.

But i have the warning for DSwitch1:

"No physical network adapters on this host are connected to the distributed switch. Virtual machines connected to the distributed switch which are running on this host might have network connectivity issues. To resolve these issues, connect at least one physical network adapter to the distributed switch."

And that is true - the only physical adapter is still used by vSwitch0. The problem is that i can not remove that adapter from vSwitch0 because i will loose connectivity.

What are the proper steps for that migration ?

Hello ,

You need to have atleast one  uplink (physical network) attached to the distributed switch. If you try to migrate the VM portgroup to the vDS without any uplinks then the VM will lose the access to the network.

Post 5.1 if you  try to migrate the vmkernel network ( management network) then the task will fail as there is no uplink attached.

Does it mean there is no way to migrate to distributed switch when ESX host has only 1 physical interface ?

(software limitation ?)

If you want to migrate virtual machine network adapters or VMkernel adapters, make sure that the destination distributed port groups have at least one active uplink, and the uplink is connected to a physical NIC on this host. Alternatively, migrate physical NICs, virtual network adapters, and VMkernel adapters at once.
