Memory/CPU Hotplug best practice

We are on vSphere 6.  We haven't been using Memory/CPU Hotplug that much in our environment.  As I recall at VMWorld in 2015 it was said that you shouldn't enable this feature by default.  Instead use it on a case by case basis for virtual machines.  It was recently identified that some templates in our environment had Memory and CPU hotplug enabled so new virtual machines have been deployed with this feature enabled by default.  Is there any best practices out there in regard to the use of this feature?  Is there still a performance penalty with enabling this feature?   The only item I've been able to find is this kb which seems to confirm that you should only enable the feature if you are planning on using it. - vNUMA is disabled if VCPU hotplug is enabled (2040375) | VMware KB.  I don't want this feature enabled for every virtual machine deployed in our environment if it should only be enabled in certain circumstances.
