Is it possible that the license in question is not assigned to any host/vcenter?
assign the license, and remove the potentially expired (or expiring) license.
The trial license I can’t remove and it won’t allow me to assign them

Whats the expiry date of the cert?Can you validate the Status of the certificate? Do you see as "Assigned"?
Will try it when I set it back up

the license isn't there to assign it

Can you confirm that your vCenter Server, and the hosts are running version 7?
esxi is 7.0u3 vsphere also the same version
