Invalid datastore path

Hi. I recently upgraded from vCenter SA 6.0 to 6.5. Everything seemed to go fine until we had our users connect to the datacenter to create their VMs. They received a "invalid datastore path" error which is attached.

I have looked at the following:

  • hosts can see the datastores
  • san can see the hosts
  • permissions seem fine
    • You get the error even if you are the administrator
  • services like DRS and HA are turned off

Interestingly, if you create the VM through vSphere Web client you do not get the error. It is only when creating it through Workstation. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

This can be due multiple cause, such as :Registering a virtual machine in the vCenter Server datastore browser may fail when the .vmx file name contains non-Basic Latin characters, for example, westあ表薔薇/west-ja.vmx or datastore path violates the expected format. Also, If a datastore corresponding to the given datastore path is not found. And,

If the file corresponding to the path does not exist on the filesystem. Even,

When a media store and its NFS datastore have the same NFS path root. To resolve this issue, please follow the KB 2013832.
