I did a stupid thing : I suspended "vmware vCenter Server Appliance" and now I can't connect to it anymore

Hi,

First some info about our system. We have a cluster of three hypervisors and a few terabyte of storage on two Synology-appliances. We use vCenter Server to control everything. This vCenter is accessible through a dedicated ip-address. So I open my vSphere-client 5.5 on my workstation, fill in the name and the credentials of the vCenter and hup I can admin everything.

Now, what did I do with my sleepy head? I suspended something called "vmware vcenter server appliance". And my vsphere-client lost my connection with the vCenter Server immediately.

I can't ping that ip-address anymore.

I'm afraid that ssh is disabled.

The virtual machines installed on it seem to be running smoothly, I can access them using RDP. So no worries for the employees using them.

So I would like to be able to restart that "vmware vcenter server appliance" but I don't know how to do it.

Any usefull ideas would be nice.

And yes, it is a really really stupid mistake.

Thanks,

Paul

Point your vSphere client to the host your vCenter VM is on.  Then  you will be able to startup the vCenter VM.

ok

Went in the cellar, opened the console in the rack and enabled the ESXi shell and SSH on all hypervisors.

Installed the vSphere Command-Line Interface on my pc too.

And it works, so I'm now able to communicate with each of those three hypervisors.

Now I just have to find out how to restart this "vmwar vCenter Server Appliance"

Try to point to the individual hosts and see where the vcenter appliance is registered and start it again.

You probably have to check each of them.

ok

found it

Used the vSphere Client to connect to each hypervisor. The "VmWare vCenter Server Appliance" appeared to be a vm on one of those hypervisors. I saw it, it was suspended and I powered it on again. Thanks for your kind help.

Thing is, the admin is on holiday, left me here at the office without any documentation whatsoever. But hey, problem is solved, it was fun looking for the solution!

Thanks again guys!

Paul
