How to migrate from 32bit vcentre server to a new 64 bit VM

Hi all

I am upgrading to vcentre 5.5

Our existing vcentre server is win server 2003 32bit.

I have created a new VM running server 2008r2 64bit and done an install of vcentre 5.5 on it.

What is the easiest way of migrating/transferring from the current server to the new one ?

thanks

Tracy

The easiest way is to backup the existing vcenter database and restore it to the new database - the upgrade guide should help http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-551-upgrad...

Hi Matrix,

It is not difficult at all, some steps are below that might help you. For playing with DB's I am assuming you already have Management studio installed and ready with you.

Since you are talking about Server 2003 so I am assuming that you are migrating from vSphere 4.x to vSphere 5.5. There are few other steps you will have to consider before migration, please refer to the guide given by Weinstein. Below are the steps just for DB migration,

If the database is local,

1. Take backup of your current Database.

2. Restore the backup on the new Physical server where you will install the new 5.5 vCenter.

3. Create new ODBC connections, and point to that Database.

3. Install the vCenter 5.5 and point to the above ODBC during installation.

If the Database is not local and is residing on some other server.

1. Still take the backup of the DB instances (for safety).

2. Create new ODBC connections, and point to that Database.

3. Install the new vCenter 5.5 and point to that ODBC.

thanks,

Hello,

it's a easy process.

Check this vmware's KB that explains how to migrate the vcenter server to another machine:
