Hello team,
In our infra we have 8 host IBM flex node x240 and 1 IBM Storwize V3700 as storage . In that storage 19 hdds occupied with 600 GB 10k 6 GB SAS disk and 5 slots are remaining , that storage is devided in to 2 for Testing and Production. Now we are planning for resizing activity so that we are planning to add 5 more hdd to the storage , Can anybody guide me how to do it successfully without any issue . If I add HDD to the storage how to initialize and map to the existng storage . If anyone has done that before please guide me to proceed.
What you have to do is create a new Disk Group (mdisk) and add to your existing Pool (mdiskgrp), to accomplish disk task do the following:
1. click on Internal Drives and then o Pools link:
2. click on Configure Storage:
3. on Configure Storage wizard, you can select Use the Recommended Configuration or Select a Different Configuration, but the most important thing is select the same RAID level of your existing disk group:
4. and select the option Expand an existing Pool:
After the capacity of the new disk was added to your existing pool, you can create new volumes of expand your existing volumes (LUN UAT ou LUN PRODUCTION).
Let me know if you need any additional help.
Here is what you need to do:
1. Insert the disks on V3700 free slots;
2. On V3700 GUI go to Internal Storage and click Configure Storage, an Wizard will open and let you add the new disks on a existing pool or create a new pool, select what you want;
3. Once the new disk is on the pool (new or existing), go to Volume menu on V3700 and choose create a new volume and map to your x240 nodes or expand the existing volume;
4. Go to your vSphere Client and rescan your HBA, and depending what you choose on previous step, create a new datastore on the new volume or expand an existing datastore.
Let me know any additional doubt.
Thanks Richardson Porto. Your response is much appreciated.
Do I need to format the disks after installing them to the device ?

Hello Richardson,
Definitely Richardson ,I will post my concerns , my doubts on this . We have planned to perform the re-sizing activity within this week , thanks for your valuable comments with screen shots .
Hello Richardson,
We have planned to increase the existing volume , As you know we have 2 Volumes named LUNPRODUCTION and LUNUAT ,
In LUNPRODUCTION we have 5.31 TB and LUNUAT having 2.8 TB.
As per new plan we have to increase the LUNPRODUCTION size from 5.31TB to 6.81TB , and LUNUAT from 2.8TB to 3.3TB .
I have attached a screen shot with this , is this the right way to expand the existing volume as shown in attached snap.
After expanding to the existing one,will this effect the existing storage on that volume?
I have one more query in vsphere step,
From which option should I scan for extended volumes , I mean from Storage or storage adapter.
after rescanning the datastore of host if this host doesn't respond or if it may struck then what can i do as this is live environment.
Highly appreciated for the last response and request for the above.
Now that you have free space on Pool after the new five disks, for increase the size of your volumes, just right click the volume and select Expand e provide information about the new volume size.
After increase the volumes on storage side, you will need rescan the HBA of your vSphere ESXi hosts for the hosts detect the new volume size, and then still on vSphere ESXi host configuration tab, go to Storage click on Properties of datastore and then select Increase and follow the wizard.
For aadditional details about increase the size of an datastore, take a look here: VMware KB: Growing or expanding a VMFS volume or datastore
Hello Richardson,
Thanks for your valuable comments , I have performed the activity on UAT however bit confused on the allocation for Production side.
First off, is there a way I can find out how much GB/TB is available after newly allocated space. I did get a pop during the initial stage where it mentioned 3.43 TB.
I am attaching screen shot for your reference before performing the activity and after the activity . Can you please tell me how much GB/TB can I add for production .
As you know we have added 5 SAS disks of 600GB each to SAN and mapped successfully. Space available upon detection into console was 558.41 GB on each disk.
I have added 593 GB for UAT
On production still its 5.31 TB , How much can I extend for PROD.
Before activity MDisk size:-
After activity MDisk size:-
Before UAT activity :-
After UAT Activity :-
A easy way to see how much available space you have is click on Pools -> MDisks by Pools and you will see a list of Pools that you have including used and free space, see an example:
Hello Richardson,
I have finished all activities as per your instruction , once again thank you very much for sharing and guiding me .
Hello Richardson ,
I have one more concern , that added 5 HDDs are not blinking like 19 HDDs . Size is now updated , only problem is with not blinks like 19 HDDs . What is the reason , Have you faced this scenario before ? Once again I m saying all configured , reflected both datastores in vsphere also ,
Hello RPorto,
can you please advise me on this , why that LED are not blinking , updated size reflected on both data stores.
