Hello All,
We have a requirement to upgrade the Host OS of a vcenter server. The Vcenter server is hosted on 2008 R2 and we are going to upgrade it to 2012 R2. We are not going to touch the vcenter and its configuration.
My question is,
1) As it is only a host os upgrade, will impact in any way the vcenter configuration or database. If yes, then what precautions i have to take.
2) Vcenter version is 5.5 and will it support 2016 OS , can we upgrade the OS to 2016 withoout making any changes to vcenter configuration or database.
Hi @siva198204
Despite fact that VC version in not supported and you should upgrade it. The vCenter 5.5 is very flexible in terms of upgrades and reinstallation.
The key is to backup VC data base => https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2012138
I'd strongly recommend to take snapshot or backup of existing machine that host VC so you can easily rollback if something will go wrong.
You can find more details in old thread here => https://communities.vmware.com/t5/VMware-vCenter-Discussions/Upgrading-vCenter-OS-from-Windows-2008-...
Windows 2016 is not supported for VC 5.5 => https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2091273
I hope that will answer your questions
Thanks for the information, will go with the upgrade and will post the outcome in a week.
