Help regarding vcenter upgrade

We have few vCenter and standalone ESX which are running on vCenter 4.0 . We need to upgrade to a single vcenter 5.1 .

Can someone provide the procedure to upgrade from 4.0 to 5.1 as in 5.1 there is sso and other things.

Also the servers in which vcenter is running is on windows 2003 we need to upgrade the same on windows 2012.

Need your assistance.

vCenter 5.1 and earlier are end of life.

upgrade paths will be available but better you stood up a brand new vCenter server and bring esxi hosts to minimum compatibility need to be managed by this new vCenter server.

But we are struggling with the license of 5.5 , so we need to upgrade to 5.1 .
