Error while Vcops (VMware-vcops-5.8.0.0-1448123-vapp.ova) on VMware ESXi (VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.5.0-1331820.x86_64.iso)

Hi All,

I am a novice in this field and still learning.

I have installed VMware ESXi 5.5 in one of my machine and running it through VMware player. Also am able to connect to VMware ESXi 5.5 through Vsphere Client 5.5 on my machine. Through my research from internet I have found that vCenter Server is only needed when we have large number of ESXi to be managed(Correct me if i am wrong). In my case i have only one. Hence I have not installed vCenter Server.

Now I want to deploy vCops 5.8 through VMware ESXi 5.5. But while deploying the OVF template(VMware-vcops-5.8.0.0-1448123-vapp.ova), I am getting the following error.

Err1.JPG

Is my above understanding correct or am I missing something obvious?

Hi RizQad,

As per the screenshot you are connecting directly to the ESXi host 192.168.0.49 and the error is reported while deploying the vCOPs OVF. This is expected because the ESXi host wont understand the vAPP object, as explained in my initial comment.

You have to connect to your vCVA IP i.e. 192.168.0.51 using the vSphere client and then import the vCOPs OVF.

Let me know if you are still facing this issue.

Hi,

Welcome Back to VMware Communities Smiley Happy

Firstly, to perform management tasks on the ESXi hosts like using vMotion, Storage vMotion, HA, DRS you need vCenter server. If you are planning to setup a lab and explore the basic options in vSphere Infrastructure I would suggest that you create the following VMs

ESXi

Windows VM with vCenter OR vCenter Appliance for Linux

Windows 7 as jumpstart host or you may configure NAT using Workstation and use vSphere client on your laptop to manage the ESXi host and the vCenter.

Lets talk about the error that you have reported. The OVF for vCOPs includes a vAPP which has two VMs i.e. UI and Analytics. vApp is an object where you can group multiple VMs and use them for multi-tiered applications like app/web/db server. Since vAPP is an object that is understood only by vCenter you get the above error while trying to import the OVF in ESXi host. I would suggest that you setup a vCenter VM first and then deploy the vCOPs OVF to fix the above error.

Note that there is a workaround to extract this OVF using 7zip and then use the VMDKs to import the VMs into ESXi host but I wouldnt recommend this to you as it wont solve the purpose of learning.

Hi Arun,

Thanks for your help. I have installed vCenter Server appliance 5.5 and configured it with default settings. But still facing the same error message while deploying vCops (File -> Deploy OVF template) through vSphere client. Below are the screen shots of the implementation.

After vCenter server appliance deployment-

After vCenter server appliance default configuration -

During deployment of vCops -

Are you connecting your client to the host directly or to the vcenter server appliance?
