Colleagues, good afternoon!
When creating a virtual machine, do you need to create a 2 disk for storage on one of them of MS SQL databases. Or do everything on the same disk, and split the C and D ha within the operating system? Does it make sense to create 2 SCSI controllers in a virtual machine for these disks,
We always use several vDisks for a VM and not only one which is then partitioning in Windows because of
- You cant increase the size of the first partition... only the last one. So with having only one partition on every vDisk whe can increase disk size when ever its needed without downtime or a reboot(as long as vDisk is smaller than 2TB)
- Different performance requirements. Place the vDisk on the storage it needs
- Backup and recovery. Having a choice what to backup or restore is always good
- We use extra SCSI Controller for every vDisk because storage vendor tells us that as a best practice

When creating VM it is mandatory to create 2 disk.
It depends on your use case.
OS will get installed on your C drive ,
You can add more disk later as well and install more application.

In WINDOWS, you can create 2 volumes on one disc. Or all the same as in the picture right?

To add to what Joerg has mentioned adding an extra SCSI controller also can increase the queue depth. Only really applicable if you are bouncing of the base limits and have multiple datastores to host the VMDKs on.
Kind regards.
And what to use the controller LSI Logic SAS or VMware Paravirtual. And which controller is better for Domain Controller, File Server and SQL Server?
For vDisk1 or Volume c: (the boot volume) we use LSI_SAS and for all others the VMware Para because if you have a need for uninstallating VMware Tools it deinstalls the SCSI PARA driver as well and than your Windows will not boot any more (Easy fix than is to change SCSI Controller back to Default and try again).
