Deleting / Removing a datastore

Hi, we are sun-setting a SAN, and therefore removing a bunch a datastores. I've read in an article that we need to do some volume Masking.

Is that really neccessary? We've removed all vms and data from these datastores. These datastores are virtually empty.

Can we just delete these datastores and then un-presenting those LUNs from the SAN?

Thanks.

Remove all virtual machines from the datastore.

Make sure that no other host is accessing the datastore.

Disable Storage DRS for the datastore.

Disable Storage I/O control for the datastore.

Make sure that the datastore is not used for vSphere HA heartbeating.

Browse to Datastores in the vSphere Web Client navigator.

1

Right-click the datastore to remove.

2

Select All vCenter Actions > Remove from Inventory .

3

Confirm that you want to remove the datastore

I never do any volume masking when I remove a lun from a host.  I just remove everything from the datastore, delete the datastore and then un-present those LUNs from the SAN
