Using ESxi 5.5U1 on IBM Flex I can create a Distributed vSwitch using the the web client or the old vSphere client but the distributed switch only appears in the old vSphere client not in the web client. Does anyone know how to solve this?
The web client shows the Distributed switch(es) being created in task pane but the vDS is only visible within legacy vSphere client.
Hi,
Assuming the vDS is working as intended after you created it... Then it looks like we have an issue where the Web Client isnt in sync...
Do you know for sure that after the creation of the vDS that the host is using it and its wokring?
If so, I think you should check this out : VMware KB: Resetting the VMware vCenter Server 5.x Inventory Service database .. It describes an issue where the web client is out of sync. You can try restarting the services first and see if that helps. (easier to do if its Windows, if not you can log into the vCenter appliance and perform the restarts)
Hope this helps.
if you can see the vDS in the classic client then you can assume that it has been created correctly. can you assign VM's to the portgroups on that switch to verify?
if so then the issue seems to be with the refresh of your web client.
have a read of this post where the original poster exhibits similar issues to yours:
vCenter 5.5 Web Client shows incorrect inventory
This is resolved. There was a significant delay in the VDS switch appearing in the Web client whereas it appeared immediately in legacy vSphere client.
This is expected behavior and why there is a refresh option in it. ![]()
