Create cost-effective home lab with Dell PowerEdge T110

Hi community,

Want to create a home lab that's not too expensive. I've Dell PowerEdge T110 server with below specs and was after ideas so that I can install ESXi, vCenter server and few VM's on top. I am also looking to create datastores and RAID if possible using below resources.

Specs:

Processor: 1 Quad Core Intel Xeon 3430 processor

Memory: 4 X 4GB=16GB on 4 DIMM slots. DDR3 1333MHz

Storage drives: Hard Drive 3.5" SATA (7200RPM): 3X250GB (Total 750GB) Enterprise Class HDD. One drive bay is empty.

DVD ROM drive

Slots: 4 PCIe G2 slots

Network: Single network adapter 1GB

RAID controller: Internal PERC S100 software controller. No hardware controller.

Video Card: Matrox G200eW w/8MB memory

Few USB and one eSATA port available.

I've checked on VMware compatibility guide and this server is compatible for ESXi 5.5 install.

Looking for ideas so that I can utilise this hardware effectively and efficiently. OK to spend few more $$ so that I can install and practise stuff..

cheers,
