Connecting USB drives to vsphere 5 using vcenter

instead of uploading info across the network to datastore in vsphere 5.1 i want to upload it from a usb drive but i cant get vcenter/vsphere to see no drive i put in none of my usb slots.  Can someone please help?? Thanks

Hi,

What steps have you done so far?  Add the USB drive to the host containing the VM you want to see it.  Add a USB controller to the VM then restart the VM.  Then under Add/Remove devices in the VM settings you will then see a new option to add a USB device and the hopefully the drive you've connected to the host will be present through the wizard.

this is for adding to a virtual machine (which i needed also) but i need one where if i dont have a vm on and just need to see it through the config data store tab or devices tab where i can drag things to the data store without uploading it through the network.

or setup USB pass through to connect the drive to your VC directly
