Changing IP address + Moving source in ESXI 5.0.0 to EXSI 5.5

Hi All,

We have certain VM which need to be moved to a different DC which have network connectivity which will help us to make sure our system is proper failover scenarions.

EXSI currently in 5.0.0 (SOURCE)

This VLAN is in standard switch.

Different Vcenter

Exsi desitination is 5.5 (DESTINATION)

This VLAN is in distributed switch.

We would like to bring the VMs to be migrated in the source EXSI to desination EXSI.

Please let me know the procudeure and precheck parameters i need to check for this to work.

VMs moving to destination will undergo IP address change, hosname change and DNS server change.

If the other side has another vCenter and booth vCenter are not linked together you will only have a few options:

- Stop the VM, unregister it on the source vCenter, copy the vm files to the other location and register the vm in the destination vCenter. After that you can adjust the networking settings of the vm to  the new dvSwitch portgroup.

- You could use the VMware converter and perform a v2v migration

- You could also use some sort of replication software where booth vCenters are connected to, like Veeam B&R

Thanks for your reply in the source EXSI i can see the Veeam server in the VM list is that the one which we are looking for.

Is the VM version 6 &7 compactible on the EXSI 5.5 destination.

I have few queries in the below point

unregister it on the source vCenter  (You mean disconnect it from the Vcenter)

copy the vm files to the other location and register the vm in the destination vCenter. (vm files in the storage of the source to the NFS storage in the destination, then build a new host to which the souce VMs are added)

I am new to this,so i may be asking simple and unwanted questions please bear with me. i would like to enhance my skills.

No, I meant unregister the VM ("Remove from inventory" is the menu item). You can only disconnect a host.

But maybe there is a misunderstanding.

So, what are you trying exactly? Do you have 2 virtual infrastructures, each on every site? And are you trying moving VMs from site A to site B?

Or do you want to move complete ESXi hosts from site A to site B?

I assumed that you only want to migrate the VMs and the hosts stay where they are.

its not the full EXSI i want to keep few VM there itself and move few to the new location.

Then you can do it the way I described. Either use the VMware Converter and perform a v2v migration. Or use a replication software, for example Veeam Backup & Replication. Or you can manually move the VMs from site A to site B. I've already mentioned the steps for this.

Hi ,

I will check on those steps in these if we are not doing manual migration then where the datastore will have the redudency if the power fails in the current source DC, so will the datas be avaliable in the destination DC even if power fails in source location.
