Changed root passwords

Simple question, I had to change my root passwords on my ESX hosts, now I am getting a message on the Vcenter that remote access for ESXi local user account 'root' has been locked.  That makes sense, what is the proper procedure for updating the login for root from Vcenter?

Hello,

is it a forgotten password  or you have the old one and only you need to change it ?

for a forgotten, kindly check the following procedure: VMware Knowledge Base

Else, check the following KB: VMware Knowledge Base

You can reset ESXi password using Host Profile.

Pre-requisite: ESXi host configured with vSphere Enterprise Plus license and ESXi host connected to vCenter server

Most likely you have some monitoring tools running which currenty use your old root PW. Depending on you defaults the account is looked after 10 tries for 900sec. or so.

You can reboot the host and if you hurry you can manage to try login trough SSH and investigate from which IP the faulty login comes.

About vCenter. It normaly doesnt use the root account of the ESXi. Only during the joining/onboarding process the root account is needed. As soon the VPXA is installed also a vpxa user will created on the ESXi and together with the certs/keys the vCenter use this one instead of root.
