CPU config on esxi 6.5

Dear all

Hi

i am usng vcenter 6.5 and esxi 6.5 but now have a question about cpu configure in vm

i see teo option in edit setting vm for cpu :

1 - CPU : that maximum is count of logical Processors

my server is hp dl380 G8 with 2 physical cpu

1 - now i am confused which of them means Socket and Core per Socket ?

2 -

also for example select cpu = 4

core per socket can select just 1,2,4

what does means?

3 -

when select cpu=8

core per socket show : 1 ,2 ,4 , 8

what does means?

4 -

when select CPU=32

and select core per socket = 8

finally show Socket = 4

what does these means ???

This may help in understanding the layout of the CPUs and cores: Virtual CPU Configuration

From a ESXi perspective it does not reserve the same setup on the physical hardware.  A VM that has two CPU's with two cores each could be ran on one physical CPU that has at least 4 cores available.  You cannot exceed the number of total resources (Total cores available on the physical host) for a virtual machine.

Let me know if this helps or if there is an area that needs more focus.

baber I'm running the exact same box (except a G7 instead of your G8) and version of ESXi

Here's what it shows as:
