Best servers to run ESXi/vCenter?

Howdy all,

I would like to query, based on personal experience, which Dell servers provide overall best performance for running ESXi/vCenter? I am looking to setup an isolated training environment to utilize approximately 100 VM's made up of Windows and Linux OSes and need to ensure I have the proper resources.

Do I need to go with a Dell blade server or would a high powered Dell PowerEdge server be sufficient?

Any info would be appreciated!

First I recommend you check the VMware HCL: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php

I think the tower servers are enough and here are some Dell tower servers compatible with vSphere ESXi 5.5:

The Dell PowerEdge R720's are more than powerful enough.  We have lots of them in our environment.

Hello,

I have these in production (two different locations) and it has been working very, very good!

Site1:

  • (3) PowerEdge R810 (more power, highly recommended )
    • 12 CPUs X7542 2.67GHz
    • 65536 MB (installed per host)
    • Two different shared storage systems connected to these 3 hosts.
      • EMC-CX300     -> Dell 6Gbps SAS HBA Adapter
      • DELL MD3220  -> 4Gb Fibre Channel to PCI Express HBA

Site2:

  • (2) PowerEdge R710
VMware Certified Professional – Datacenter Virtualization (vSphere 5)
