vSphere Web Services SDK

I am working with a group fo Developer teaching them VMware, they are wondering if the vSphere Web Services SDK invokes commands directly on the Host. If anyone can tell me how vSphere Web Services SDK works that will really help me out.

Also, if somone can tell how the vSwitch works down to the packets. Is the vSwitch part of the kernel and if so is it open source?
