VMware tools installation get stuck on Macos Catalina

Hello Everyone,
I need to install Vmware tools on MacOS Catalina using the following command:

sudo installer -verbose -pkg /Volumes/VMware\ Tools/Install\ VMware\ Tools.app/Contents/Resources/VMware\ Tools.pkg  -target /



But it gets stuck at 

installer: Registering updated components….....


Would anyone know how to troubleshoot this please ?

Is this for a VM running in VMware Fusion?

So a MacOS VM running on ESXi, presumably on Mac hardware?
