xp host fails to start after workstation 6.5 install

Hi All,

I have an AMD Athlon 64 computer with 32bit XP on it as host operating system.

After i install the vmware workstation 6.5.1-126130 and the computer reboots after the install it cannot start again any more.

The windows begins to load, but just after the desktop appears, the screen goes blank, and the machine reboots without any error message or blue screen.

The windows can be started in safe mode, and i can uninstall vmware, but i'd like to use it...

Have anyone seen anyhing like this?

Thanks

Peter

I had this problem coming from a XP machine with VMware Server on it to VMware Workstation. I believe I removed VMware Workstation, deleted all the files for VMware under C:\Program Files and then also removed the registry key HKEY_Local_Machine\SOFTWARE\VMware and then rebooted, downloaded the latest version of vmware workstation and then installed and it worked fine after that.

I had this earlier on the same machine with VMware-player-2.0.2-59824, but then i cannot repair windows xp, and reinstalled. Now, after the reinstall the same issue is present with the workstation, but this time i can remove it in safe mode.

Vmware server was not installed on this machine.

I'm about to give up, but i don't wan't to use virtualpc Smiley Sad

Can you look in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > System and see if there are any relevant entries to the reset?

Otherwise, could you go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings, uncheck "Automatically reset". Then the next time you encounter this, you probably will see a BSOD with an error message. A small memory dump might be useful for us too.

Additionally, it might be good to run something like memtest86.

Hi,

Today i did some experimenting:

I've disabled the auto reboot, but still no error message.

It reboots during the installation procedure, but without any warning. I suppose the installer should ask at least a confirmation before rebooting, so i think the error happens at the first initialisation of some component.

I've checked the event log, but no error found before the reboot, only the following messages, (in timely order)

A warning (in hugarian) with LoadPerf source and 2006 event ID, about some corrupted performance counter data in the system registry (LastCounter and LastHelp values), telling that the first and second DWORD values of the Data part are origninal values, and the third and fourth values are updated, new values (whatever it means...)

An error (in hungarian) with LoadPerf source and 3001 event ID, about the invalid format of the performance counter name in the registry, having an invalid index string 5134 , in the first DWORD of the Data part, while the last valid index values are in the Data part second and thirs DWORD (again, i have no idea what that means).

An information (in hungarian) with LoadPerf source and 1000 event ID, about the VMware service performance counters loading has succesfully finished, and the new index values had been added to the service.

An information from the VMware NAT Service indicating start.

An information from the VMware NAT Service containing the parameters used.

The next entry is after the reboot, no other messages in the application log, the security log and the system log.

After the reboot, the desktop shows up, but after a second the screen blanks and the bios is displayed. No blue screen, no error message, no nothing, only the startup sound is played, and reboot.

In safe mode the computer starts up fine, but the problem persist in normal mode.

See attached screenshots form the event log (in the above order).

I'm absolutely sure it has nothing to do with the system memory, but i did not run memtest86 yet.

Hope the information helped.

Additionally during the install i've uncechcked the .NET debugger, since i dont need it, and the machine has a visual studio 2005 installed.

I've disabled the following services: Symantec Client Security, MSSQL Server, Cisco VPN Client, Symantec Antivirus, but the error persists, seems like none of these are causing the problem.

I've disabled the VMware NAT Service, not the Agent and the DHCP, but the problem persists.

I've disabled all the VMware services, but the result is the same.

I've disabled the vmware-tray, but no help.

All the above is the same with vmware player.

Any other suggestions?

Best Regards,

Peter
