That doesn't give us much to go on. What fails?

I am running on Ubuntu 9.04 without any problems (other than user errors).

uname -a

Linux dell690 2.6.28-14-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Sat Jul 25 01:19:55 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Currently running 2 W2008 Server (one is R2 RC) VM's and testing terminal services setups with 2 different XP VM's.

Similarly, no problems with the same setup here, must be something else going on. I am running slackware, win nt win xp as clients in my vms

Linux laptop 2.6.28-14-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Sat Jul 25 00:28:35 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

If you run /usr/bin/vmware from within a terminal window (console) it will print a whole lot of other stuff, including a reference to a log file.

Is it the installation that fails?

if so it might be problems with modules compiled in the kernel - or lack of loaded modules..

VMware workstation works fine on me Gentoo system - just have a issue with a usb device 😃

Beware ... I am only a reasonably competent user, I'm not absolutely sure what's going on but here is my take on it.

That looks like your source install file may be corrupt. Where are you installing from, a CD? Did you download it? Did the download seem to be ok?If you did download then if you go look at the download page where you got it there are often md5sums which you could run a command line test on your computer to check that you get the same md5sum before just downloading again.
