vmware esx installation on vmware workstation

I tried installing esxi 3.5 or vsphere, on vmware workstation with windows server 2003 64 bit as the host. It kept on giving this error: "Could not detect which operating system is in this disc image. You will need to specify which operating system will be installed.

do not use easy-install - use "I will install later" instead.

Have a look here http://sanbarrow.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=62

there I posted some preconfigured VMs - they work for ESX and ESXi as long as you use an Intel-host

thanks mate, I was able to install the esx on the baremetal(harddrive without a host). I tried your idea and its error message is always " detected that the host system is not 64bit " , but actually the os I am using is a windows 2003 64bit edition on an intel based computer. I dont know why it has to be frustrating. I just want to use it as a foundation for my cisco voice emulation lab, but it has set me some days late. please any help !!?

you need to check your CPU whether is 64 bits and enable the VT from the BIOS, before the Vmware can let you run the 64 bits operating system.

Make sure you power cycle the system after you enable VT (as Craig mentioned) in the BIOS!

A "warm" reboot is not sufficient for most systems.

Thanks so much, very helpful, I just realise that my intel p4 HT x86 pc, does not support VT. Thanks.
