virtual network drivers on the host are incompatible...

I am getting a message that says "The virtual network drivers on the host are incompatible with the installed VMware application. Expected version 5. Please reinstall the product. Virtual device Ethernet0 will start disconnected."

The VM in question has been around for some time and began life as a version 5 VM however it has been upgraded to 6.5. The error just started happening and the probably trigger is likely related to my upgrading my Host from XP Pro to VIsta 64 (fresh install). I just reinstalled VMW 6.5 and now cannot use the networking.

Any ideas? For one thing it is not clear what 'reinstall the product" means as I just did intall 6.5 on a fresh machine. What is the Expected version 5 bit about? Finally, how can I resolve this and get networking back?

Thanks!

very strange - you don't do a full manual install - don't you ?

Did you ever have VMserver or Workstation 5 installed on that machine ?

Which physical network-cards do you have ?

Do you have a firewire nic ?

Any special VPN-virtual network-cards installed ?

I may have solved the problem. I did an uninstall, removed the folders then reinstalled. The clue was that I did install it in a folder that had been used prior to my upgrade. This was apparently not a good idea...
