virtual disk drive decrease - VMware 7.0

Good day.

Dear all,

can you help me decrease virtual disk drive space? I created quite large virtual hard drive and need to reduce it by 50%. In fact, the main task is following: migrate a virtual machine created in VMware 7.0 to ESX 4.1 and reduce a size twice. I have VMware Workstation 7.0 and guest OS RedHat Linux.

Thank you in advice.

Welcome to the forums!

That will only work if your virtual disk is thin provisioned. Install the VMware Tools inside (you need X) and use the VMware Toolbox to shrink the disk. or use the compact function:

AWo, thanks for your reply!

And what should I do if my virtual hard drive size is fixed and I want to change it? For example, I want my VHD reach 25 GB instead of 50 GB?

In this case you either can

- add a new smaller disk to the guest and copy all files over. That is easy if this is not the system/boot disk. If it is the system disk you need to make it bootable again.

- use partition editor like Partition Magic, Acronis or free ones to resize the disk. Make a (backup) copy of the original file first!
